Elevations look horizontally at a face of the building, inside or out, showing heights, window and door proportions, and exterior materials. Plans answer “where”; elevations answer “how tall and what does it look like.”

Sections slice vertically through the building and show what the cut exposes: foundation to roof, floor thicknesses, ceiling heights, how the structure stacks. Sections are where the building stops being a diagram and becomes an assembly.

Details zoom in. A detail blows up one small condition, a wall-to-foundation joint, a window head, a stair nosing, at a large scale with every material labeled. Details exist because the failure points of buildings are the places where materials meet, and those places cannot be drawn honestly at floor-plan scale.

How to read a blueprint

Nobody reads a drawing set front to back. The set is a web, and the skill is following its references.

Start at the title block. Confirm the sheet, the scale, and above all the revision against the current issue list. Thirty seconds here prevents the most expensive class of routine mistake on any job site.

Read the plan for location, then follow the callouts. Plans are studded with reference symbols: a circle split by a line means “see detail,” with the detail number on top and its sheet number below; a flag with an arrow marks where a section is cut and which way you are looking. When the floor plan shows a bathroom wall, the callout chain takes you to the section through that wall, then to the waterproofing detail at its base. Use the scale, and never measure the paper. Each view states its scale, such as a quarter inch to the foot, or 1:50 in metric. Two of these do outsized work. TYP is a compression device: a detail marked typical applies to every matching condition in the building, so one drawing governs a hundred locations. Digital vs paper blueprints

Modern drawing sets are produced in CAD or building information modeling (BIM) software and issued as PDFs, and most job-site reading now happens on tablets. The budget starts as a quantity takeoff. An estimator goes through the set sheet by sheet and counts what the drawings imply: cubic yards of concrete from the foundation plan, board feet of lumber from the framing plans, fixtures from the schedules, square feet of every finish. The three terms get used interchangeably, and they should not be.

A blueprint (or drawing set, or construction documents) is the whole package: every series, every sheet, the complete buildable description of the project.
